A Sonic Liberation
Isn’t it amazing how goooood a song can make you feel? Yesterday I played “Ebony Eyes” by Stevie Wonder (from my phone mind you!) and it was INFECTIOUS! I felt the joy all over me from the inside out! I was dancing around my house in my pajamas or workout clothes. (I don’t remember which). Let me tell you I had to play that song twice just to get all the goodness out of it. Even with the horror show that is this current administration, the wars being carried out by the US and other countries, even with the defunding of healthcare and weather reports systems, education and the arts and other life essentials, a song can really remind you of the Spirit of Life.
I’m so grateful music called to me at such a young age. In my younger years it was like an imaginary friend that I could always play with, and by adolescence it became a studded leather jacket that identified my music gang. As a young adult music was a mercurial thing slipping from my hands, difficult to hold but by the time I graduated college, music and I were became inseparable again. Then I had a child and I feared music might leave me so I hung on tight, grasping like a desperate lover. It worked for a while but I lost a part of myself in that grasping. I lost some faith in myself and my power. Little by little music and I have been dancing together again though. Slow dances late at night, dance breaks in the afternoon when no one is around, late morning check-ins. When music and I get together now I request specific terms to honor my needs and to my surprise music listens as if it was always waiting for me to set these terms.
Well, next week music and I have been putting together a little something new (and old too:). Next week, Thursday, May 28th at 7pm the Spirit of music and I will be showing up and showing out with Brandon Terzic at Couleur Cafe. It’s been 10 years since Brandon and I shared this project and the music has been moving us from the inside out as well. We hope you can join us to feel the joy, get your dance on, and have another musical rest stop at The Porch Sessions.
See you soon!
