Music For Your Mental Health

“I’m so glad I’ve been practicing everyday. It's been so meditative!”

- Singer/performer & lifelong learner

I’ve been thinking a lot about how healing music is. With all the upheaval blowing through our news and media stations, its good to be reminded that music and art aren't as frivolous as many people in our society often think it is. In fact I regularly try to imagine how much healthier our society and world could be if everyone had a creative hobby or positive way to express themself. How many incidences of violence, depression, and misunderstanding would be transformed if each child, young adult, and senior could channel their human experience into something creative.

I started working with Catherine several years ago when she looked me up in order to get some support with her singing. Somewhere in her 60’s Catherine loved music but felt that she had lost many of her high notes and was afraid they were gone forever. We began working on exercises to release as well as strengthen her upper register. It was super apparent Catherine had a good ear. She and her husband had been playing music together for decades and both loved having a common creative activity. After several months of consistent lessons she was already feeling more confident and after a year Catherine was astounded at the changes in her voice! She could sing high, her voice was more lyrical, and she and her husband were having even more fun going through their repertoire.

Today Catherine and her husband David book a rehearsal studio every weekend to explore their music and just last month they had their first proper gig at a local restaurant in Queens. David and Catherine attest to the inspiring and calming properties of music, especially that for David it’s a great way to let go of the stress from work. So the next time you’re looking for a way to clear your mind and center your thoughts try 15 minutes of singing:) Also, I’ll be sharing my next monthly virtual vocal warmup, Vocal Gym, on Wednesday, February 5th at 4:30pm est. Hope to see you then!
