What’s Your Soul’s Music?
People often wonder how to discern the the music that best suits their voice. But the longer I teach and study music and movement, the more that I believe it’s really about finding the energy that most aligns with your energetic body.
For some people, this might be immediately apparent, but for many it’s not. And the process of uncovering, unwinding, releasing, and stretching your voice is actually a byproduct of what helps you to feel into your energetic body. Interestingly, one of the first things that I typically notice with students is that they often have a smaller/diminished expectation of what they think their voice can deliver.
For example if a person has a high voice, then they often have a belief they can’t sing low notes, or if a person tends towards quieter singing, then they don’t realize that they can actually sing chesty and full. However, everyone can access a huge range of sounds that only their voice and body can emit with a particular resonance and timbre.
The more that you practice singing and making music, the more you can feel or connect to the energy behind the music. That energy comes from lyrics, storyline, harmony, rhythm, instrumentation but it’s also a culmination of the energy behind those that make or made the music originally.
The last several years I’ve been allowing myself to expand my expectations of what I think I can and “should” do both musically as well as personally. This Fall I’m excited to share some new music at The Porch Sessions at Shapeshifter Lab which I’ve written over the last few years. Stay TUNED!!:) I hope to see you there!
