Feeding Your Thriving Artist Kit for Challenging Times
Several months ago I sent out a newsletter about building your Thriving Artist Kit for Challenging Times. There were things on this list like gratitude, a recoding device, subway/map, and some of you even sent me add-on items such as a mini multi-tool, bandana, and a small rock to stay grounded. You can read this blog here.
After the heinous events of the last two weeks I thought it would be a good time to revisit this list. And I know to some this may sound controversial but I want to propose that fun be on this list and even highlighted. There is a lot of work to do ahead, personal work, collective work, hard conversations, organizing and more. But we need ways to metabolize cruelty and injustice while having the stomach to go on. I hear so many people from all different backgrounds, from psychology to leaders in business, healers and more discuss the importance of protecting your energy. And as a performer the same holds true. You need to protect your energy as well as transform your energy in order to conjure new music, learn new pieces, show up for rehearsals, record, perform, and also in order to meal prep, exercise, be there for loved ones, clean your house and more.
So as we enter January I want to propose that you include fun and making music to your thriving artist kit. Over the coming months I will be sharing more offerings to support this. And I happen to have just the thing to boost both your chops as well as your happy quotient (which studies show will also boost your immune system:). This coming Wednesday, January 14th, at 4:30pm est I’m going to be offering Vocal Gym, my monthly online vocal warmup. This isn’t just for the trained or professional singer, this is for everybody. And this isn’t your ordinary singing class. In this class we will practice breathwork and grounding movement/awareness to protect your energy and do vocal exercises to expand your range, to shake out the “yucks”, “grrrrs!”, and “blahs”, and stir up some joy. So sign up today! Let’s keep thriving!
